Governors Island Park, Phase 1
New York, NY
Senior Landscape Architect / Technical Director - with West 8
Phase 1 of of the 2010 master plan opened in 2014, offering 30 acres of new park and public spaces and visitor amenities to the historic North Island. The greater multi-phase plan dedicated significant funding to upgrade and modernize not only the park and public spaces but also its supporting infrastructure. Potable water, storm water and sewer, and major electrical re-designs were carefully coordinated and planned to minimize future disruption and/or impediment to the open spaces. hundreds of thousands of yards of gravel fills and soils were imported to the island to create topography. The topography not only raised the island out of the flood zone but provided the conditions upon which a forest could be established. The challenges and lessons learned in Phase 1 set the stage for the successful and streamlined construction of phase 2 - the hills. Phase 1 included:
More than 4 miles of custom designed precast concrete edges - engineered to be a repeatable family of interchangeable pieces for ease of construction
A pattern language that informed natural play areas, water play areas, flexible dining and programmed spaces, and furnishings
A comprehensive wayfinding strategy and signage program and custom font (Guppy Sans)

Research, design and documentation and fabrication oversight of all hardscape and custom furnishings
implemented a document management software to streamline collaboration across disciplines, owner, and contractor
