Royal Jubilee Hospital Competition
Victoria, BC, Canada
Designer / Project Manager - with Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg
A collaboration with CEI Architects, the landscape design approach for the Royal Jubilee Hospital addition is simple. It finds it’s principles in the acronymic reification of hospital function – the ER. Considered an Emergency Response to the growing needs of the healthcare environment, our approach sought to respond to the RE:gional characteristics of the Royal Jubilee Hospital.
RE:pair (Healing with the Senses) + RE:Establish + RE:growth + RE:Store + RE:gional
With early trust gained from the project team we successfully negotiated improvements to the siting, massing and programming of the building, that facilitated the curation of unique exterior landscape spaces. These places were given identities that corresponded to the specified programmatic functions within the hospital as well as requirements for patient, staff, and visitor experience. An existing historic chapel was carefully integrated as part of our proposal. We were not successful in being awarded the project but my effective coordination and presentation skills earned me a commendable role in the team’s final presentation of the project to Provincial Government and Health Authority officials, members of the public, and hospital staff.
