Shangri-La Hotel and Residences

Vancouver, BC, Canada

Designer / Project Manager - with Phillips Farevaag Smallenberg

PFS Studio was responsible for the landscape design and public realm for this landmark mixed use development entirely on structure. A multi-level network of  public open spaces are structured around an organized linkage between Thurlow and Alberni Streets. This "up-and-over" traverses a verdant grove of timber bamboo across floating steel stairs and landings that support outdoor dining around a water garden still-life. It's location metaphorically borrows the ‘Shangri-La’ forest and emphasizes the vertical shear of the hotel and residences above.Critical in negotiating additional building height with the City, the public spaces include a street level plaza for rotating public art curated by the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Role on the Project:

  • Project Manager / Designer

  • Pre-purcahase / pre-grow agreement for timber bamboo in Portland, OR, USA

  • Design, rendering, drawing production, client presentations, City permitting

  • Landscape Construction Administration and on-site inspection
